    I’m working on making dynamically breaking glass in Maya this week for my digital media senior project. Here’s a still image two frames (1/12 second) after the little ball breaks through the glass:

    Next I’ll be pulling this “stand-alone” test into the main scene file and work out the details of making it work in the larger 3D animation, but I liked the look of this really simple and uncluttered view of it.

    As an aside, this took less time to model/animate than it’s taking to render (basically taking the raw modeling/animate file and turning it into something you can watch on your TV), but that’s mostly because I’m using more effects (mostly related to the lighting) than are strictly needed. But it’s fun nonetheless.

    Yesterday’s The Simpsons episode apparently began with an intro created by a British street artist. While it was interesting, I’m honestly surprised by the chatter about it (4 tweets about it made it into @TopTweets, for example). Maybe it’s my 4+ years of university digital media arts courses, or maybe it’s just my indifference/annoyance with The Simpsons in general, but I find the shock and awe rather strange and, yes, a little annoying.

    Haha. Spent 90 minutes “checking my animation render” (20 SD frames in 13 hours or 39 minutes/frame…) this afternoon. Either I really love computers (yeah) or I really don’t want to do my Flash homework (yeah).

    Started an HD render through the department render farm, though, and so far the SD frames are looking awesome, so whenever the HD render finishes it’s gonna look SWEET.

    That’s the plan, anyway. But first…Flash. This one’s not going to look as sweet, because I just don’t care enough.

    4am Monday of final exams week, and there are (still) a dozen students (and one professor) in the digital media labs, as well as EVERY SINGLE computer running animation renders, not to mention the render farm (which renders animations 20 times faster than an individual lab machine) having enough jobs queued up to keep it running for the next few days.

    Some people write papers and cram for exams. I submit to you that my major is far more exciting.

    I do very little designing and animating off of sketches or other reference…it’s all off the top of my head “on-the-fly”, so to speak. This has worked out pretty well for me, but at times when my mind is trying to wonder off in different directions or is otherwise NOT focusing on the part of my memory bank that’s holding those ideas…I’m dead in the water staring at a blank screen feeling like an idiot for my style of working.

    *sigh*
